"I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road - A New York Shakespeare Festival Production" Quoted from the back cover: THE NEW YORK SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL The New York Shakespeare Festival, "the single most important theatrical institution in the country". (Eder, New York Times), has been under the leadership of Joseph Papp since its origin as a Shakespeare Workshop in a church basement on the Lower East Side in 1954. A pioneer in admission-free outdoor summer performances, the festival has produced "Free Shakespeare in Central Park" since 1957 and in 1964 added a Mobile Theater to tour city parks and playgrounds. Seeking a year-round home and an outlet for new American plays, the Festival converted a New York City landmark building into the Public Theater, where over 100 plays have been produced in its first decade starting with the original production of Hair in 1967. Among the Festival's award-winning productions are; No Place To Be Somebody, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Sticks and Bones, That Championship Season, Short Eyes, The Taking of Miss Janie, Steamers, For Colored Girls..., A Chorus Line and Runaways which collectively, have won six NY Critics Awards, four Tony Awards and three Pulitzer Prizes. For TV the Festival has produced three distinguished dramatic specials: Much Ado About Nothing, Sticks and Bones and Wedding Band. The Festival served as theater constituent at Lincoln Center from 1973 to 1977 when, citing fiscal and artistic factors, Joseph Papp announced a departure from the Beaumont and Newhouse Theaters to concentrate all energies and resources at the public Theater. The move generated a profusion of outstanding work during the 1978-79 season at the Festival's multi-theater landmark home on Lafayette street where I'm Getting My Act Together... opened at the public's Anspacher Theater in May and played until December, to make room for the new season, the Festival took its "Act" a few blocks down the road to Circle In The Square (Downtown) on Bleecker Street.
