Glenn, Jr., United States Marine Corps, stepped from the recovered space capsule Friendship 7 to the deck of the United States ship Noa and into the pages of history. Colonel Glenn was the first American astronaut to orbit the earth, in a controlled flight conducted before the eyes and ears of a waiting world.
